Tanya

I reach the kitchens early, and there’s just Merle and a couple of bakers in, making a start to the day before the rest arrive. She greets me brightly and asks if I want another bread bake-off.

“Not today.” I grin at her. “Archer wants me to go through some paperwork, but I’ll try and make it for cakes later, okay?”

She calls out an affirmative and waves. She doesn’t think anything of my change in duties, or at least, doesn’t seem to.

I realize that I’m appraising everyone in my head. Merle doesn’t seem suspicious, does that mean she’s not in on it, or that she is and she’s an outstanding actress?

I suddenly have an insight into why Archer is so preoccupied. If he feels like he can’t trust anyone, he must be doing this shit in his head continuously.

I start sifting through recent orders, and straight away, I can see something is wrong. A large number of goods are delivered every morning, yet the ledgers record that there is not enough supply to make all the required meals. Someone’s been attempting to fix it by an increase of orders, but that all disappears again as well.

It’s happening with such regularity that I can’t figure out why no one has noticed it yet. Could it really be just as I was thinking the other day—no one person is accountable for the inventory of supplies?

In that case, it would be easy to make truckloads of resources disappear. But why would anyone want to steal half the food rations from the palace? It doesn’t make any sense. The prince happily opens his doors and local businesses to the poor, so it can’t be someone ripping him off out of spite.

If these guys are connected to Damon and his auctions, I can’t figure out why. We have no evidence that they are connected, not really. What would Damon need with truckloads of food?

I make a few trips between the office and the kitchen. A few people call out to me in a friendly way, and I wave back, but I don’t join in with them today. Archer put me in charge, and I can’t take that responsibility lightly. The others seem disappointed when I don’t play and tease, but that doesn’t matter.

If I’m going to be in here, they should respect me as the boss. I’m not just some pretty toy bought to grace the prince’s bed—he’s shown his trust in me by giving me control of this job. I can’t let him down.

As I move through the storerooms into the big fridges out the back, I find everything is empty. The record books state that there should be a backlog of stock here, except there isn’t.

“Merle?” I come out of the big freezer, feeling very important with my clipboard and files.

“Yeah, Tanya?” Merle is fighting with a particularly tough loaf of bread dough and doesn’t look up.

“Do you have any idea where all the backup supplies are?”

“Huh? Wait.” She stands up and wipes off her hands.
